The Inspiration behind the creation of “FOLK SONG 3000”

When Eugene Ripper was just starting out as a solo artist he was fortunate to have an conversation with legendary NYC folkie Dave Van Ronk ( btw, who was the inspiration for the Coen Brothers movie Inside Llewyn Davis). They were in the artist lounge at a folk festival chatting. Ripper was new at the songwriting craft and was experimenting with old folk tunes trying to create a fresh approach in both lyric and sonic vibe. " For me, it was pure creative instinct so, given the chance I asked him if this was cool. After all, this dude had knocked around Greenwich Village the likes of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. If anybody would know the score - he would." Van Ronk didn't miss a beat. "Absolutely ! That's exactly what you're supposed to do!” So, with that in mind, FOLK SONG 3000 is a stylistic mash up: Classic NYC trip hop beat, Americana acoustic guitar lick and peppered with latin percussion. The lyrics respect the tradition of folk storytelling but updated to a modern context.

lyrics

"FOLK SONG 3000"

Out from a picket fence a young man rode
Cruising down the highway in a GTO
He was driving west - to reach the beach
He was riding fast - to reach the beach

Peter Blacks only son

When it hits the summer gotta go man go
Down to the beach and an ocean rock show
danced all day and he danced all night
lost his love on a hot summer night

Peter Blacks only son……His only son

Early that morning he lay down his head
Lay his head down…looked all around
see if anybody was hanging ‘round
Carry him home cause his heart had died
Carry him home — his heart had died

Looked all around but he looked in vain
No one hanging ‘round gonna ease his pain
Made up his mind – time had come
Lay his head down in the cold sun
Lay his head down in the cold sun

Peter Blacks only son
His only Son
